The most important practical rule is to confirm the space is clear before the final opening is closed. Proofing should also respect the building. Roof ventilation, drainage, flashing and weather resistance cannot be compromised. On high-value properties, materials and finishing should be selected with both function and appearance in mind.

A ground-level visual check can identify obvious maintenance concerns, but roof access should be left to people with the appropriate safety equipment and experience.
